Metal Detecting & Gold Cradling: Goldfields Relics: Victorian Silver: Garrett AT Pro.

Part I: We make a visit to an 1876 North Queensland Goldfields site, where we try our hand at some fine gold prospecting the old fashioned way with a replica 19th Century Gold Cradle (rocker box), while Mrs NQ hunts the creeks with her AT Pro. Not much gold to be had, just a half a dozen specks, but Mrs NQ comes up with a beautiful Victorian Silver Shilling and a Victorian Penny, left behind by the ‘Old Timers’ from among the water and cobbles in the creek bed. Another find provides a direct link to the Chinese miners on the field, and the opium trade. Thanks for watching and subscribing, please visit our blog www.nqexplorers.com

Thanks for your great comment SaltyKayak. With regards to Aboriginal artefacts – Aboriginal people did not use bows and arrows – so no arrowheads, but they used spears (thrown by a woomera) and stone axes. You can occasionally stumble across a ‘tool factory’ where they have been making and sharpening spear and axe heads, or sharpening grooves in rocks along the creeklines. But since the Aboriginal population was so small and widespread, the sites are few and far between. Best wishes and HH!

Love your videos. I am doing a little research (from Florida USA) about Australia. My son and family are moving to Australia sometime in the next 6 months and there is a possibility, my honey and I will also spend some time there. I will probably do a little hobby prospecting if I go. But I have one question. I have found literally thousands of Native American artifacts here but I have not seen one stone artifact (arrowhead) from Australia. Did the Aborigines not make stone artifacts there?

Thanks for watching Wuchagot – when we say ‘grass’ in this context, it is around 1 to 2 metres deep, tough and almost impenetrable, you need a machete to get into it LOL. No hope of swinging a detector. Later in the dry it often burns and that is the only way you can get back into some areas! GL and HH mate!

Thanks for watching mate, we have picked up Garrett gear from all over, from NQ Miners Den in Cairns, the Gold Mining Centre in Adelaide, and from Texas Premium Detectors on line – which tends to be much cheaper but for warranty you have to return to the US. Hope this helps mate.

  6. Wuchagot says:

Love your Vids but I have to ask why you didn’t detect in the grass?

Thanks for your comments Rich, the big nugget continues to elude us LOL, but it is not for want of trying! We love those Victorian coins – that’s about as old as coins get in our part of Australia, the area was only settled with the discovery of this particular goldfield in the 1870s. But goldfield relics keep turning up with a direct connection to the history of the area, so there is always something to find or investigate – Best wishes mate and Happy Hunting!

An absolutely superb and highly enjoyable video hunt in the gold fields. Congratulations to both of you on your awesome finds. I was rooting for you to find that big nugget, but it wasn’t to be on this occasion. Those coins and relics are amazing, especially the early viccy shilling and the old head QV english penny. that spur was a find and a half and in such good condition too. Loved the historical images and info, but those flies… ugh!! Thanks for sharing, Warren, much appreciated.GL HH :D
