$1,300 for a gold coin…what a steal. where did you buy it?

  3. richard50ification says:

That is all fine except for the slot which is there for measuring thickness of the coin rather than its diameter. Thanks for posting.

  4. David Spitzer says:

thats what this test is doing – its testing the diameter and thickness and weight. at a given thickness and diameter only one metal alloy will weigh the exact weight the real gold coin is supposed to

  6. TutorialTipCom says:

Well This test is pretty easy, but I am not sure if it’s enough to test if the coin is gold or fake. It can be made where it passes these two tests and still not real gold.

dam ive been ripped off for 10k

  8. jellytotty1 says:

@harrynking777 The test cant be fooled that way because it tests the diameter aswell as the circumference and height of the coin. So its basically testing the volume, all geniune american eagles have the same volume. The alloy you mentioned may tip the balance but it wont fit snuggly in balance. This is Archimedes principle basically only the purity of gold in american eagles can have that volume nothing else including the alloy you mentioned. This is due to the size of atoms on a nano level

  9. malignantpoodle says:

Who is “they” that are going to report?

American Eagles are not as good because they are often valued based on the year and condition of the coin. People pay way less than spot for a worn one, and charge way more than spot for a proof one. Plus, if you’re traveling they’re harder to trade.
Krugerrands are recognized and easy to trade anywhere in the world. If I’m in Vietnam, I can easily trade a Krugerrand. Not the case with Eagles.

If tungsten is mixed with platinum then covered in gold the coin would be the correct weight. A skilled forger would fool that cheap tester.

  11. hurtpuppy says:

Then, if you buy the newer Chinese fakes, these tests fail because the new fakes will pass these stupid tests. The new Chinese fakes are plated in 22 karat gold, so it passes the “acid tests.” Don’t use the acid tests, it does destroy your gold and reduces the value of the coin.

The ONLY sure way to figure out if a coin is fake after it passes these tests is to test its specific gravity. Look up “specific gravity” on Google to find out how.

  12. maximusTLP says:

can u use acid to test the coin?

  18. LoneStar1776 says:

I think it only applies to buying gold bullion using over 10k in cash. I am not 100% sure but I doubt you get reported when you buy an automobile. Take care bro.
